Shimla is the capital of the state of Himachal Pradesh. Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas at an elevation of about 2000 metres, Shimla's pleasant climate made it the summer capital during the days of the British Raj. Its architecture, the presence of temples and churches, and its climate attract a lot of tourists to this place, one of the best hill stations in the country.

Climate
Tourists from Bengaluru to Shimla love its cold winters and moderately warm summers. March and April bring spring weather with blooming flowers and lush vegetation. The best time to visit is during its pleasant summers that last from May to June, and are followed by the wet monsoon from July to September. Autumn blends into winter from October onwards and the coldest weather lasts from December to February.
The average temperature in summer is between 16°C and 28°C. Winter temperatures range between -7°C and 10°C with snowfall.

Things to do
For history lovers: One of the first things Bengaluru to Shimla visitors should do is the Heritage Walk. It takes about three hours but it hits all the highlights of Shimla. It covers the history and architecture of Shimla along with other sights, sounds, and experiences. The walk covers the Vidhan Sabha, the Viceregal Lodge, the Heritage Zone, and the Main Square among other sites.
For nature lovers: Annandale is green area loved by locals and visitors alike. Photographers will love its lush grasslands, pine trees, and views of snow-capped mountains. The grassy grounds are used for community events like picnics, fairs, festivals, and parades. Annandale also has a golf course, a race-course, and an Indian Army Museum to browse through.
Hikers will lose track of time in the Green Valley located 6 kms away from Shimla and the Glen about 4 kms away, with the Chadwick Falls close by. Both locations are picturesque picnic spots overlooking valleys with their dense pine forests, and beautiful flora and fauna to enjoy.
For the religious: Shimla has a number of religious sites, particularly churches and temples. Christ Church, one of the oldest churches in India, gets many visitors every day. The majestic cream coloured structure with its steeples looks especially lovely when lit in the evenings. Another landmark church is the sprawling and impressive St. Michael's Cathedral with its Gothic architecture and grey stone walls.
Given the region, most of the temples are located on hills and are naturally beautiful with greenery all around them. Tara Devi Temple, dedicated to the goddess of stars, is quiet and tranquil despite the flurry of visitors. The Hanuman Temple stands out with its red and orange colours. It is especially busy with devotees during festivals. The Kali Bari Temple is located close to the city centre. Dedicated to the goddess Kali, the temple built in 1845 is bright, attractive, and well maintained.
