This quaint synagogue was originally built in 1568 by the descendants of Spanish, Dutch and other European Jews. 3. Get a glimpse of centuries-old fishing traditions through Chinese fishing nets
These ancient Chinese fishing nets have almost become the symbol of Kochi. It is said that these unique nets were brought to Kochi from the court of Chinese emperor Kublai Khan in the 14th century. The nets can be found around Lake Vembanad and around Cherai Beach on Vypeen Island. While these nets are not used anymore, you can pay the local fishermen to get a ‘demo’.Tip: Try finding a fisherman selling a fresh catch, get it cooked at a nearby shack and relish it!
4. Spend two hours appreciating art at the Mattancherry Palace
This palace was built in around 1555 by the Portuguese and was gifted to the then king of Kochi. It was later renovated by the Dutch and so is also known as the Dutch Palace. On display are praise-worthy colourful murals of Hindu mythologies such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata. There is also a tiny temple and a gallery housing royal possessions. A guided tour is recommended for understanding the history behind the displays better.Tip: Close to the palace is a small local market selling unique handicrafts, clothes, spices and some noteworthy tea and coffee.

5. Find peace at St. Francis Church
Built in 1503, this is the oldest European church in India. The church has plain, beige exteriors and colourful interiors. It is known mainly as the original burial place of Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. He was buried here in 1524 and remained here for 14 years until his remains were taken to Lisbon. One can still view his tombstone here.Tip: Keep around 30 minutes to one hour to visit this church
