Very nice hostel!
The hostel locate in a walking distance of 15 minutes up the hill from the center so it's not too bad.
The common space is very homey and cozy and also spacious because the hostel doesn't have many rooms.
Breakfast was very good- pancakes, cereal and coffee.
Shower was clean though the tap wasn't comfortable to use.
The manager is a cool helpfull guy who speaks very good english and the rest of the staff were young volunteers.

Hope you like pancakes
We were lucky most of the volunteers were cool.
Owner was a bit weird and daunted around the place trying to look relevant. If your not american and can't stomach thick pancakes more than once a week, then I'm afraid it's only cereals for breakfast.
Place could use a good clean. But I don't Think they can fit any more volunteers in the place. I estimate it fits about 30 people, at the time we were there there was 7 volunteers.

Ok, but could be better
Some parts in the hostel are broken or just part time fixed. If the hostel would be in a better shape and more clean, this one could be very cool!
The staff is cool and friendly. Due to that, i'm a little bit sorry for this medium-review, but i can't give four or five points.

Great Value
Cheap drinks available at the bar, clean kitchen and the Hostel is kept WARM during winter which is awesome. The shower were not the best but definitely worth dealing with it considering the prices.
We stayed in a private room which was comfy and somewhat spacious.
I would recommend it.

A Disastrous Stay
Upon arrival we were informed by the hapless young volunteer behind the counter that our room had already been given away to another couple. The hostel is basically manned by volunteers, most of whom seem to be wholly under-trained in their roles and as such are mostly incompetent. After calling over three or four more clueless volunteers we were still no closer to a solution and the owner was nowhere to be seen. Eventually he showed up and offered us beds in a dorm for free which was a decent gesture but didn't allow us the privacy or relaxation we had expected after a hard overnight journey.
Later, at the small bar downstairs, one of the under-trained staff attempted to rip us off with beer prices during the happy hour which again took some arduous rectifying. Exhausted and annoyed, we retired to bed where a fellow guest snored like a beast which meant I couldn't drift off even with my ear plugs in. Eventually, I went downstairs and slept on the sofa in the common area just so I could get a few hours of shut eye. This would not have happened if we had been allotted the room we had booked and paid for.
The next day we were eventually moved to a private room (although not the one we had booked) and were chilling out on our beds when we heard a key in our locked door which was subsequently opened. Thankfully we were fully dressed and were not caught short but the fellow who was coming in seemed as shocked as we were by the intrusion. Apparently he and his partner had paid for the room and left their bags as they went elsewhere for a few days and their stuff was moved to a different location to accommodate us after the double booking mix up. An expensive jacket of his was reported missing (he came back to our room again to search for it) which miraculously showed up a few hours later. I have no idea where he and his partner were moved to or if they remained at the hostel.
The final insult came at check-out where we were asked to pay for a private for two full nights despite the reconciliatory dorm offer. Eventually the elusive owner was chased down after strenuous discussions and explanations but even still we were charged marginally more than we should have been. By this point we just admitted defeat and paid up to avoid any more frustrating arguments that went nowhere.
On top of these issues I also heard one of the volunteers being rude about us as I went back downstairs to switch an incorrect locker key I had been given by mistake upon our removal to the dorm; there was excrement smeared on one of the toilet seats for hours which was utterly grim; and the rooms' ancient mattresses sag terribly and the bed sheets are grey with age.
Basically our stay was a torturous disaster from start to finish. I can easily say that our stay at Universal Traveller's Lodge was one of the worst travel experiences of my life and was bereft of any positives bar the sizeable and well-stocked kitchen. In hindsight we should have looked elsewhere to stay but as we were travelling on a budget we unfortunately decided to stay. This is definitely a hostel to avoid from my point of view.
