Great location

The Phoenix was conveniently located, within walking distance to museums and the palace and the train station. Our room was comfortable. The breakfast buffet offered a good range and the staff were keen to ensure we had everything we wanted.

Another great stay

It's our second time staying in this boutique hotel and we always appreciate the atmosphere of the hotel with colonial architecture blended with javanese Yogyakarta culture and decorations. This hotel has its own charm that make us wanted to come back. We like the room with its little balcony.
Beside its location not far from the train station and Malioboro, we really appreciate the great breakfast with a lot of choice, the rooms and all the kindness and friendliness of staffs from the entrance gate, reception, restaurant and housekeeping.
Thanks a lot to Bayu and his team in restaurant and also Eko in Front Office team.

Unfortunately, a bit faded

I was back at the Phoenix after five years, and I've stayed here three times before during the last decade and a half. This is still a nice place, but it has really faded - both the common areas and especially the rooms. How fabulous were those the first and second time I stayed here! Amenities, textiles, little gifts and food, just an amazing heritage hotel like a Raffles or so. This time, the heritage rooms were dusty, barren, rough and a bit spartan regarding shower and closets, an empty mini bar, and especially - just three electricity outlets, of which two were occupied by needed lamps. In 2024, in a highly digital country?
Yes, it's a great hotel historically, with interesting spaces, but that also means they cater to groups and events, at the cost of hotel residents. Which, strangely, seemed to be by more than half American retired couples, kind of a sunset home atmosphere. Whereas the locals had breakfast smoking and with naked feet on the chair - maybe charming, but no, that's not usual in hotels like this here. The breakfast okay but not as good as before, not by half, and lousy machine coffee from some machine that hardly ever worked. No more gamelan music, more's the pity.
The pool is gorgeous, but the water (and yes it's necessary) so chemicalized that it burns the lips. The location of the hotel isn't good - not even a small shopping place like an Indomaret in walking distance, and the hotel doesn't sell water or sandwiches or cake. If you order such things via Grab, delivery is forced to wait at the security gate and not allowed to come to the reception area, so if it rains, you get wet - gentility gone wrong. Wifi is good. Staff is friendly, excepting reception.
I was here for a convention and I think the price was not bad, but surely not cheap. I actually enjoyed the place all around, but there's a lot of glitches, and I hope someone will take care of the hotel and relaunch it back to the future, which it surely deserves.

Another pleasant experience

Great value and most importantly very hospitable staffs. Every time I have a chance to stay at the Phoenix, not one time I ever felt unattended. The customer/ guests experience seems to be one of the highest elements that the hotel has in its core. It is reflected through Ms Gita and Ms Arini who have been greeted and assisted me with sincerity and made me feel so welcome with greatest comfort. Thank you The Phoenix, your highest quality have permeated through your staff.

Potential to be outstanding

We stayed one night at the hotel. The property itself is beautiful, a stately old mansion converted to a hotel. Well decorated with handicrafts, almost like staying in a museum. Good friendly service all around. They upgraded us to a room with a balcony overlooking the pool. A good size room other than the cramped bath and toilet area. The damp smells from the shower are probably an indication of plumbing that needs attention. Overall whilst it is a lovely property with a potential to be outstanding with more careful maintenance and it some areas a long overdue makeover.
