The hotel is located inside Bhakor Street area, the hotel design is Tibetan style. Very beautiful, with rooftop access to view the city and Potala Palace. It's walking distance to Jokhang Temple.

A Hidden Gem in Lhasa: Shambala Palace

I had the pleasure of staying at Shambala Palace in Lhasa back in January 204, and it was an unforgettable experience. The unique and antique interior decor is a rare find in Lhasa, offering a stunning array of furniture that exudes the historical charm of old Lhasa. If you’re seeking a historical experience, this hotel is a superior choice compared to the more modern accommodations.
The facilities are top-notch, with heating and hot showers available even in winter, ensuring a comfortable stay regardless of the season. The rooftop terrace provides a fantastic view of the Potala Palace, and the hotel’s location is incredibly convenient, with Barkhor and Jokhang Temple just a few minutes’ walk away.
The manager and staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, making my stay even more enjoyable. I looked forward to our chats every evening. Shambala Palace is truly a hidden gem among the hotels in Lhasa. Highly recommended!

Traditional hotel with great location

The hotel locates in the old town area, just couple steps from Johkang Temple, Barkor street, and many restaurants. It takes about 15-20 minutes to walk to Potala Palace. You can do so at night to watch the light show, or take picture of Potala Palace from the park across from the palace.
Hotel is very pretty, traditional style with Tibetan decoration. We like how it's a bit dark and mysterious, perfectly authentic. Room are big and well kept. Breakfast are minimal, but one shouldn't expect much from there. There is no lift, so it can be a hassle to walk up the stairs with big luggage, especially at such high attitude. They have rooms at the lower level, so request for one if it's an issue scaling the stairs. Everyone at the hotel is so sweet and attentive, even though English is just barely there (perfectly fine for us since we don't expect everyone speaks English when travelling to foreign country). There are many amazing, authentic local restaurants around the corners.
Check out the rooftop with view of Potala Palace and Lhasa. If you look for authenticity, this is the place. If you look for western comfort/style, pick something else.

It feels like you're staying in a family home - that just happens to be a palace!

Fantastic! Beautiful! Amazing! Can you tell that I loved this place?! The decor is fabulous, both in the public areas and in the rooms - which are gorgeous. A good sized room, with beautiful decoration, comfortable bed, kettle, wifi, slippers, dressing gown, etc. The bathroom was interesting, but a little too cold (in November) for a shower (and we were told not to shower for the first few days at altitude anyway). The room would have been cold, but a heater warmed things up nicely and the humidifier helped stave off the dry cough you can get at altitude.
The rooftop view of Potala Palace took my breath away. I really knew I was in Tibet at this place - it had none of the Chinese 'showy-ness' of some of the modern hotels - it felt like a truly authentic place to stay. The family running it were lovely, they were friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. It felt very homely.
There's no lift (although the owner carried our cases) and the stairs are steep and some of the floors are uneven, so if you have mobility issues, ask for a ground floor room.
The location is wonderful. We spent 4 days here prior to our tour starting and we really enjoyed walking around the car-free lanes surrounding the hotel - as well as Barkhor Street which is just 5 minutes away. Again, we felt like we were really in Tibet - a wonderful atmosphere, safe and friendly, with local families out walking, interesting shops.
When we transferred to our tour hotel, we were so disappointed! It looked like any other Chinese Hotel and the out-of-town area looked like any Chinese city. However, it did confirm just how special Shambhala Palace really is.

Exceptional

I spent a magical few days at the Shambhala Palace before and then after an organized tour, meaning I learned to deeply appreciate the differences between this gem in old town Lhasa and newly built hotels. Just a few minutes away from Jokhang temple and Barkhor Street this former home of a lama offers breathtaking views of Potala Palace from the rooftop, lots of love to details in the beautifully and carefully traditionally restored furniture and large rooms with modernized bathrooms as well as extremely friendly and helpful staff. I highly recommend this place!
